Damen Shipyards Group has won over a new client with the German family-owned shipping company, Reederei Bern Sibum ordering four Combi Freighters (CF) 3850. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in early 2026.

Reederei Bernd Sibum, a first-time customer of Damen, first sought feedback from current operators of the CF 3850, before ordering the hybrid-ready vessels.

The four Combi Freighter 3850 vessels feature an enhanced design platform, offering a 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency. They are hybrid-ready, meaning they are fully capable of running on biofuels and can be equipped with wind-assist technology, placing them at the forefront of sustainable shipping solutions, Damen said.

The vessels are fitted with a battery set that supports the bow thruster for peak shaving and operations in port. To enhance efficiency and minimize emissions in the future, they are prepared for a battery-powered propulsion system and an improved shore power connection. This setup enables these modifications to be executed without requiring extensive conversions or lengthy downtime.

Constructed to the highest specifications at Damen Yichang Shipyard in China, the vessels are designed and developed in Drachten, the Netherlands. From this base, Damen offers extensive warranty support, provided by dedicated Service Engineers. After delivery, they will operate in the northwest European shortsea shipping sector, where fleet renewal is crucial to address changing operational needs. The CF 3850 adheres to the latest IMO regulations and port state requirements, ensuring it remains flexible to incorporate emerging technologies and future environmental criteria.
