Vattenfall eyes Port of Kaskinen as Korsnäs wind farm project cargo hub
Vattenfall is exploring the potential of the Port of Kaskinen to support its offshore wind farm project in Korsnäs. The energy company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the port to assess its suitability for related activities.
Vattenfall is presently working on establishing Finland’s inaugural commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Korsnäs. The development of offshore wind relies significantly on ports, which are crucial for the local supply chain and the storage of components.
“Signing this Memorandum of Understanding with Port of Kaskinen is an important step for the Korsnäs project, as it outlines the potential collaboration between the project and the port. This includes the potential use of the port for the logistics and construction of the wind farm, as well as the operation and maintenance of the wind turbines,” said Klaus Nissen, the Project Director from Vattenfall.
“We are glad to be able to sign this MOU with Vattenfall. The Korsnäs wind farm is very close to Kaskinen and therefore, we see it as a very important step to collaborate with Vattenfall. It will enable us to proceed with the planning for offshore wind farm projects in all directions with stakeholders and co-operatives. Such a project like Korsnäs will have a major positive impact on the region and the port and would create hundreds of new job opportunities,” states Patrik Hellman, the CEO of Port of Kaskinen.
In 2022, Vattenfall entered a joint venture with Metsähallitus to build and operate the project located at Korsnäs off the Finnish west coast. The project will have a capacity of 1.3 GW and a potential annual production of 5 TWh. The wind farm is expected to cost between €2 and €3 billion, and it is scheduled to start operating in the early 2030s.
