Kazakhstan aims to become one of the major hubs for the transportation of oversized cargo from the post-Soviet space to China and other countries of the Asia Pacific region.

After February 2022, the country’s importance for transit delivery of oversized cargo from Russia and other CIS states to China and in the opposite direction significantly increased.

According to earlier statements made by the Kazakh Vice Minister of Transport Satzhan Ablaliev, the country has made significant efforts to turn into a major hub for transit delivery of various oversized cargo in the West-East direction. That was mainly due to investments, which were allocated by the local state and private investors for the development of transport infrastructure and the elimination of bureaucratic hurdles.

In this regard, Kazakh economists expect the country’s project cargo sector to grow up to 30 per cent this year compared to 2023, mainly due to the increase in transit deliveries.

Experts also believe the local sector of super-heavy cargo transportation has big potential for further growth in 2024-2025. This will be mainly due to the planned implementation of some significant investment projects involving the delivery of oversized cargo. An example is the planned building of the nuclear power plant in the Almaty region of the country and the launch of other large-scale energy projects. That should contribute to the growth of heavy-cargo transportation within the country in the short term.
