Rotterdam-based marine contractor Van Oord has been contracted by Vattenfall to service its 5 MW turbines across Northern Europe with its MPI Resolution. The offshore installation vessel has been chartered by Vattenfall through Van Oord’s unit MPI Offshore.

Wind turbines spin and naturally undergo damage and deterioration as time passes, requiring both planned upkeep and unexpected fixes. The improved accessibility of the MPI Resolution will enhance the effectiveness of Vattenfall’s offshore turbines, ultimately boosting the production of clean energy from its current resources. This three-year agreement will ensure that the vessel is available for several months each year, mainly during the busiest maintenance period from early March to late October.

The MPI Resolution, owned by Van Oord is the world’s first purpose-built vessel for installing offshore wind turbines, foundations and transition pieces. The vessel is dedicated to the O&M market and is fully committed to offshore heavy maintenance campaigns involving major components. For several years now, MPI Offshore has delivered O&M services across Vattenfall’s entire portfolio of offshore wind farms in Europe.

“We are pleased to announce this contract and look forward to deepening our relationship with Van Oord as a trusted partner. By ensuring the availability of the MPI Resolution, we anticipate significant improvements in our O&M activities,” Pavlo Malyshenko, Head of Offshore Generation at Vattenfall said.

“Van Oord recognises the importance of strategic partnerships, and we are proud that Vattenfall has once again selected us as a trusted partner to maintain their European offshore wind portfolio. This new long-term framework contract for heavy maintenance, which succeeds our previous four-year framework contract, ensures the continuous deployment of our MPI Resolution in the growing O&M market,” said Arnoud Kuis, Managing Director Offshore Energy at Van Oord.
