Sarens, a global leader in heavy lifting and specialised transport, completed the relocation of two Rubber Type Gantries (RTGs) for the Armadale Line Upgrade Alliance (ALUA) in Perth, Australia.

The project, undertaken by Sarens’ Oceania team from June 1 to 3, 2024, showcased their expertise in technical solutions and engineering. The primary objective was to move the two RTGs 250 metres to a new location, a crucial step in the ongoing Armadale Line Upgrade project aimed at improving Perth’s public transport system.

Sarens employed a sophisticated approach to ensure the safe and efficient relocation. They utilised 40 axle lines of Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) equipped with two Power Pack Units (PPU) and four load-spreading beams. This configuration allowed the RTGs to be transported as a single unit without disconnecting hoses, enabling immediate operational resumption at the new site.

A dedicated team, including a project manager, engineer, supervisors, and technical solutions operators, meticulously planned and executed the relocation. The project’s tight timeframe and the need to minimise disruptions necessitated meticulous planning. The entire operation, encompassing mobilisation, execution, and demobilisation, was completed within four days.

The narrow transport route presented a logistical challenge. Sarens’ engineering team meticulously planned the sweep path to ensure safe and efficient sideways tracking of the massive RTGs.

The client, ALUA, selected Sarens for their innovative approach and ability to provide a technical solution that minimised downtime. By relocating the RTGs without dismantling them, Sarens ensured that the gantries could immediately resume operations, thereby not affecting the overall project timeline.

The successful relocation of the RTGs exemplifies Sarens’ commitment to delivering high-quality and efficient solutions for complex projects. This project not only highlighted their technical capabilities but also solidified their reputation as a reliable partner for infrastructure projects.
