Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has reached a significant milestone in its Tealing Substation Extension project with the arrival of a massive 105-tonne transformer. This behemoth component represents a key piece of the puzzle in the network upgrade, a critical step towards bolstering Scotland’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Moving such a colossal piece of equipment demands meticulous planning and collaboration. SSEN collaborated with Police Scotland, specialist haulier Allelys, and a consortium of partners – including Balfour Beatty plc, Transport Scotland, Amey, Dundee City Council, and Angus Council – to ensure the safe and efficient transport of the transformer from Dundee Port to its final destination at Tealing Substation. Minimizing disruption was a top priority throughout the complex operation.

The Tealing Substation Extension project is part of a larger initiative to reinforce the existing 275kV east coast transmission network. This strategic effort aims to facilitate the connection of onshore and offshore renewable energy projects, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Scotland.

The extension will enable the connection of Seagreen Wind Energy Limited (SWEL) offshore wind farm to SSEN’s network. The Seagreen offshore wind farm development is owned by SSE Renewables (49 per cent) and Total (51 per cent). Once complete, the project will take on the title of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm with 114 turbines and a capacity of 1,075MW.
