Vuyk Engineering designs blade rack grillages for Bold Tern
Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam has been contracted to design various support grillages and sea fastenings for Fred. Olsen Windcarrier that is currently carrying out a number of projects in Taiwan.
With its jack-up vessel Bold Tern, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is working on Changfang and Xidao offshore wind farms. For these projects and future wind turbine generator (WTG) installation campaigns, Fred. Olsen needed blade rack grillages to transport various blade racks of various suppliers.
Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam got the task to design various support grillages and sea fastenings and make them durable, taking into account the various types of WTG components of various suppliers. The focus was also placed on enhancing the interchangeability of project specific components, thereby increasing operational efficiency of the vessel.
By cantilevering the blade racks at the back, Vuyk Engineering was able to free up substantial deck space. This enabled the ship to carry components for up to four turbine sets per trip. There was also space for a cherry picker to support the blade lifting tool.
The company further noted that the design is suitable for various SGRE and Vestas blade racks, and that structure is sufficiently high above deck to avoid blade immersion as well as use of deck space below blades for container storage. Furthermore, structures are placed above deck to avoid welding against sideshell and involvement of class.
