HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed model-based class approval testing for its HiMSEN Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine. The engine, designed for marine propulsion and power generation, has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation by seven classification societies including ABS (USA), DNV (Norway), LR (UK), BV (France), RINA (Italy), NK (Japan), and KR (Korea).

The company’s new ammonia engine utilizes a high-pressure direct injection method, a significant departure from the traditional low-pressure premixed combustion method. This innovative approach offers improved efficiency and reduced emissions.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said it has overcome the technological challenges of developing ammonia engines, successfully optimizing fuel spraying time and minimizing emissions. The company’s integrated scrubber system has also played a crucial role in reducing ammonia concentrations.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will soon start commercialising its newly developed HiMSEN Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine, following the successful completion of model-based class approval testing. This engine is suitable for various applications, including ammonia carriers, marine power generation, and land-based power generation.

“The development of this ammonia engine has great meaning as it will be an opportunity for us to lead the market while providing an expanded eco-friendly duel-duel engine lineup,” said an official of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. “We aim to enhance our advanced technology and take the lead in the future eco-friendly ship market.”
