Finnish shipping company Meriaura has added more capacity to its fleet with the charter of the multipurpose vessel Karion.

The 1997-built vessel has a cargo capacity of 3,900 tons and 5,580 cubic metres. It also features a Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A notation, making it well-suited for the northern conditions. Karion is a sister vessel to Aava VG, Aurelie, Lottaland, Loraland and Dreamland.

“We are excited to have this time-chartered lady join our fleet and look forward to being able to serve our customers even more flexibly thanks to the enlarged capacity she provides”, says Mathias Landor, COO at Meriaura.

The company is also focusing on reducing emissions from shipping with its EcoVoy concept. Recently it partnered with Boliden to deploy its biofuel-compliant vessels to transport zinc, copper and nickel concentrate for the company.

According to the company, over the five shipments totalling 25,000 tons of cargo (5,000 tons of cargo each) the CO2 savings per trip would amount to 15 tons.

It is in line with the comments that biofuels are the most practical solution available in the market currently to reduce emissions.
