The European Specialized Transport Association (ESTA) has unveiled its five-year manifesto, outlining its strategic priorities for the abnormal transport sector. The manifesto aims to foster a safer, more efficient, and harmonized environment for heavy transport operations across Europe.

Named ‘Competitive and Harmonised Abnormal Transport in Europe’ unveiled in two versions has four headline priorities, namely harmonised rules for abnormal road transport, access to safe and secured parking places, adoption of sector-specific rules and elimination of country-specific barriers and establishment of abnormal road corridors.

ESTA advocates for consistent regulations governing abnormal road transport across Europe. The organization calls for the establishment of a network of secure parking areas specifically designed for abnormal transport vehicles. ESTA seeks to eliminate country-specific barriers and introduce sector-specific rules to streamline operations. The association supports the creation of designated corridors within the trans-European road network to facilitate the movement of abnormal transport.

ESTA Director Ton Klijn emphasized the growing political attention being paid to the transport sector, underscoring the need for coordinated action at the European level. “There is a growing level of political activity in the transport sector as our national leaders become increasingly aware of the importance of the work being carried out by our members,” Klijn said. “Now it is essential that those same political leaders appreciate the need for a coordinated approach that crosses European borders and boundaries if the potentially great gains for industry and our clients are to be captured and not lost. We hope our manifesto will help to drive that debate forward.”

To achieve these goals, ESTA is actively involved in the ongoing revision of the EU’s Weights and Transport Directive. The organization has also been advocating for the creation of a network of safe parking places to enhance industry productivity and attract new talent.

Furthermore, ESTA recognizes the growing importance of abnormal road transport between European industrial areas and is pushing for the introduction of “abnormal transport corridors.” These corridors would ensure smooth and efficient movement of heavy transport while minimizing potential infrastructure damage.

ESTA’s manifesto reflects its commitment to creating a more favorable environment for abnormal transport operations in Europe. By promoting harmonization, safety, and efficiency, ESTA aims to contribute to the overall success and sustainability of the industry.
